What is Morse Code?

Morse code is a communication system that encodes characters as sequences of two signals: short marks called dots (·) and long marks called dashes (−). Originally developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s–1840s for use with telegraph systems, it later became internationally standardised by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) as International Morse Code.

Encoding Rules

  • Character separation: individual letters/digits within a word are separated by a single space.
  • Word separation: words are separated by / (space-slash-space).
  • Case-insensitive: Morse code does not distinguish uppercase from lowercase; input is converted to uppercase before encoding.

Common Uses Today

  • Amateur (ham) radio communications
  • Aviation and maritime emergency signalling
  • Accessibility input methods (e.g. single-switch communication)
  • Military and survival scenarios
  • Puzzles, escape rooms, and cryptography education
